Assistance for Seniors
Some of our NPLS Offices offer additional assistance for people age 60 or older. These include the offices serving Bradford, Lehigh, Luzerne, Northampton, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties. Monroe and Pike Counties provide some services by referral from their local Area Agencies on Aging.
Elder law is a term used for a variety of legal issues which may affect our growing senior population. Typically, seniors should consider a Will, financial and health care power of attorney and a living will in advance of a sudden serious illness or end of life situation. The U.S. Department of Justice has just launched Elder Justice Initiative to combat elder abuse. This is a good resource to learn more about efforts to combat elder abuse, neglect, and financial fraud and exploitation through training, resources, and information.
If a senior is in need of services (such as Apprise for health insurance issues including the Pennsylvania PACE program for prescription drugs) or is the victim of abuse, contact Area Agency on Aging (AAA) in your county. AAA which provides a wide-range of elder support services including a Protective Services Unit which responds to physical and financial abuse. You may call your county AAA or the State Aging office at 1-800-490-8505.
